The tremendous boom in online commerce in recent years has revolutionised the world of packaging. Millions and millions of items are shipped every month worldwide, and if you stop and think about the last one you received, you'll see that it comes perfectly packaged, in a recyclable material, and tailored to the size of the object it contains. This is frustration-free packaging, a completely new concept introduced by the company that ships the most in the world. But why this solution? What are its advantages?
The essentials
- Frustration-free packaging aims to satisfy consumers, save costs for vendors, and be sustainable.
- It focuses on perfectly adjusted, easy-to-open packaging made from sustainable materials.
- Benefits include reduced costs, improved customer image, and environmental contribution.
What is frustration-free packaging?
Since everything starts from the beginning, the first thing is to know what this term means. Frustration-free packaging means "packaging free of frustrations", i.e., a package that 100% satisfies the consumer. But it also favours and saves costs for the giant that invented it (Amazon), as it is designed to be carried out directly by its vendors and allows them to reship it without any manipulation. Amazon has been running this initiative for 10 years now, and expectations have been met from the very beginning. The result? Firstly, an improved user experience, as the package received is aesthetic and easy to open; you, as a consumer, surely appreciate it. Secondly, it is totally sustainable, as the material it is made from is fully recyclable and transported with fewer carbon emissions into the environment, which our planet appreciates. And finally, and no less important, because it saves costs, and all buyers of this online giant benefit from it.

Characteristics of frustration-free packaging
Frustration-free packaging has been used by Amazon for 10 years to be more sustainable for the planet and more user-friendly. To achieve this, the initial idea was to perfectly adjust the packaging to the item it transports, with an easy-to-open design and, above all, made with the most sustainable materials possible. All this reduces the volume of the packaging, making it easier and cheaper to transport, and also allowing a greater number of shipments per transport, saving the environment numerous carbon emissions. On the other hand, it designs packaging that includes only what is necessary, is very easy to open, and is fully recyclable. But from October 2019, Amazon went further and obligated all its sellers to have packages larger than 45.5 x 34 x 26.5 cm, or weighing more than 12.3 kg, certified as "ready to ship". This means that when an item is received, it can be sent directly to the buyer as it is received. This reduces waste, saves time in the supply chain, and benefits the user with cost savings and faster shipping.
Frustration-free packaging is characterised by materials that are sustainable, easy to open, and perfectly adjusted to the product they contain.
